HP shuffles off to Buffalo ...

This seasons traveling HP hat award goes to:
Ed, Marie, Paul, Bernie, Ernie, Barbara, Al and Ro ..

... who went on a weekend adventure to visit the guided missle cruiser Little Rock at the Naval Park in Buffalo, NY. Ed H. was on the commissioning crew of the ship and this was his first opportunity to tour the ship since he left the Navy. The trip also included a visit to Niagara Falls (see photo below), and of course an opportunity to have lunch at the restaurant where Buffalo Wings were born, Frank and Theresa's Anchor Bar in downtown Buffalo.

2009 Easter Egg Hunt

Once again this year, the Annual Holiday Point Easter Egg Hunt was held on the beach on Easter Sunday. Thanks to the efforts of Marie, Ed, Doris, Monty, Ro and Al more than 200 eggs were hidden all over Holiday Point Beach for the children of the community and their friends.

A great time was had by all as can be seen from the photos here.

2009 Flag Day Ceremony

For the second year, Holiday Point has hosted a very special ceremony for the Sherman Scouts and the Sherman Veteran's Association. This year on Flag Day, the two groups (along with HPA members, town officials and guests) assembled at the beach to take part in the annual "Flag Retirement Ceremony" in which old and worn out flags are retired in accordance with the protocols set up by the United States government.

Readings about the meaning behind the design of the flag, and about the original 13 states of the union were presented by members of the local scout troops, as they also participated in the moving ritual of cutting up the flag and burning each component as it is described.

2009 Candlewood Dragon Boat Race

Once again Holiday Point demonstrated its enthusiasm and community spirit by turning out "in force" for the first ever Candlewood Dragon Boat Race, which was held as a fund raiser for the Candlewood Lake Authority. Through the untiring efforts of Phyllis S., HPA gathered $2,000 in donations and brought forth a team of powerful (well ... enthusiastic!) paddlers called the Dragon Slayers, to compete against 7 other teams from around the area, including teams from three local high schools, several local businesses and Candlewood Isle, the only other community on the lake to officially participate in the event.

Our team was made up of HPA members, augmented by several "ringers" from town hall, some business associates of George K. and even Phyllis' contractor. We were also accompanied by a large entourage of cheerleaders who made it clear that Holiday Point was the noisest and most fun loving, if not most competitive, team at the event.

Considering that the average age of the HP team was at least 10 years older then the next oldest group, we did exceptionally well, finishing in fourth place ... next year ... we start practicing as soon as the ice breaks on the lake!
