Fall 2009

The days are getting shorter ... as the lyric goes ...

Yup, September is here and the summer season is winding down. Kids are back in school, the beach is quiet on most days and the schedule of activities at Holiday Point has grown thin after a fun August.

One redeeming grace is that Paul and Bernie, our official harbingers of summer are staying into October this year and it almost makes it feel like we've been able to take summer into "overtime", except that we have to wear jackets to happy hour these Thursday afternoons.

Below are some highlights of the month gone by .... enjoy!

The Holiday Point Kids
Swim to the Island ... again ...

The Great 2009 Swim to the Island

For the first time in a VERY long time, our brave Holiday Point kids decided to accept the challenge of swimming from the beach straight down the bay to the first island (more than a mile). Nine kids dove off the swim platform and headed south, as the adults kept watch from boats, kayaks and canoes.

In the end, seven completed the arduous journey, with Matt P. actually continuing on all the way down to Chicken Rock!

2009 Wine Tasting

This year, concerns over inclement weather put the celebration of one of our favorite gatherings at risk. But, Susie and Tom Q. came to the rescue and offered to host the 7th Annual HP Wine Tasting at their home.

As a result, 37 people came together to sample a variety of wines selected for us by our good friends Mike and Donna of Sherman Wine and Spirits.

It ended up being a great evening of good food, great

wines, and the joy of sharing the evening with neighbors and friends.

Wine Tasting is held as a fund raiser to help finance special projects and activities within the community, and this year we raised more than $450!

Thanks to all who attended ... and to Ro, who organized the event, Bernie and Marie for their untiring help ... and especially Sue and Tom for making us all feel welcome in their beautiful home.

2009 Lobster Festival

Once again, Labor Day weekend was the opportunity to celebrate the 6th Annual Lobster Festival on Holiday Point beach.

And, once again, the event attracted a record crowd of enthusiastic seafood lovers. More than 80 lobsters gave their lives for the culinary enjoyment and delight of Holiday Point neighbors, friends and relatives.

Along with a dizzying array of side dishes, desserts, and Al's famous (infamous?) clam chowder, no one went home hungry or unsatisfied.

It was a great evening with perfect weather and an incredibly beautiful moon rise over the lake. If you missed it this year, make sure you plan to attend next year.

Even if lobster isn't your favorite meal (Bill-Al was seen grilling up a beautiful ham steak), it's a great party and the last major gathering of the year on Holiday Point beach.

The Great Wall of HP

If you went down to the beach recently, you may have noticed a collection of old telephone poles on the ground near the horseshoe pits. These are planned to help in the creation of a bocce ball court in that area, as well as being used to build the Great Wall of HP.

In actuality, it is a retaining wall to level off the area along the road there and to permit the creation of additional parking at the beach. So, on a sunny Saturday afternoon in September, 'da boyz' got together to start it's construction. Bob C. came down with his machine, and Norm L., Ernie K., Ed H., Paul Q., John S., Roland H. and Al B. joined forces to construct the wall. Although such walls appear to be rather simple in design when completed, it was very evident to all who were there that it was no small job. But, as is always the case with the remarkable level of volunteerism at HP ... substantial progress was made and you can expect to see it completed in the near future.

Thanks, to Hillary C. for bring coffee and donuts (primary nutrients for all HP volunteer workers - along with blue tops!) and also to Marie, Bernie, Barbara and Amanda for their support and assistance.

Also, a big thank you to Mark C. and Bill-Al A. for supplying the raw materials to build the wall.
