Upcoming Events Calendar

April, 2004

Dear Holiday Pointers,

Another summer approaches and with spring cleaning beckoning, I realize it would be more fun to write to you than wash the windows. So here it is--the 2004 Newsletter.

As most of you know, last summer was a great one for parties. We thought we had celebrated everything, especially when we added the blackout barbecue to the list, but it turns out that there are even more ideas for parites that we haven't yet tried. Al is busy organizing and the tentative summer calendar -- so check out that section of the website for frequent updates. If you didn’t attend any parties last summer, consider this your invitation.

As usual, many people have been busy doing chores for the community. The website was developed and is updated for free. Many of our signs have been repainted (and some were decorated). The picnic was catered at cost. Several trees have been removed with loaned extension ladders and willing labor. The water system was opened and closed and (gulp) repaired and the docks got dragged in and out of the water. Some folks are working on a plan for maintaining community land and protecting our local environment. And the list goes on and on.

Thank you to each and every person who contributed labor & thought to our community. Because of you this is a great place to live.

See you round the neighborhood,
Missy Alexander, President

Beach Improvements 2004

It's time for some home improvements and in the summertime home is at the point. Last summer we raked up and partied without any major changes to our haven by the water. Unfortunately, this year we have a few things to attend to.

First... Beach Clean Up Day
Saturday, May 1st
Raking starts about 10:00
Lunch will be served around 12:00
(raindate, May 2nd)

There is regular old spring-cleaning to do. We'll gather with rakes and gloves and winter gossip on Saturday, May 1st. There are plenty of branches to gather and leaves to rake, and perhaps a few trees to trim. As usual, we'll buy some lunch and enjoy the official start to the summer season.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few swimmers! Anyone want to place bets on which kid gets wet first?

By the way- we still need at least 3 signs that say Swim at your own risk. Anyone feel ambitious?

Second... Dock Renovations

Last summer three things became very clear:

1. Our swim float is officially hazardous. We need to replace the floatation so the kids (and the grown-ups) can't sink it. Many of us watched with bated breath and were relieved when the summer ended without any injuries. We can't delay this repair any longer.

2. Pier two needs to be raised to make it less attractive to geese and more useful to boaters. It is difficult to step in and out of boats with the current design and the geese would not stop settling there in the evening. It was a mess.

3. Pier two also needs to be re-oriented. The level of the lake and the size of boats make the inner docks more or less useless. We need to shift things around so that all of our weekend boaters have room to park.

At the end of last summer, there were preliminary discussions on this topic between Norm LeMay, Paul Quinn, Ed Hayes, Laura Hernandez Missy Alexander, and several other folks who happened to be down at the beach. We think--with a few donations of left over lumber and a lot of free labor--we can add a level to the old docks at a reasonably low cost.

Given the list, it should be clear to everyone that we're going to need help. So, the ad hoc dock committee will meet and finalize costs and plans. If it looks like we can do this at a reasonably low cost, we'll be calling everyone to help with a build. Keep your eyes open for signs and get ready to renovate.

Water System Report

There is absolutely nothing to say on this subject & we hope this situation continues. We like to rotate our bills around here. We plan to start things up on April 17th. Check the calendar for details.

2nd Annual Chili Fiesta Deemed Fantastica!

On June 27, 2003, many happy Holiday Pointers gathered for the second annual HPA chili party. The number in attendance is unknown, but it was definitely a rowdy affair.

There were 10 different chilis ranging from vegetarian to full strength beef (no beans allowed). Some folks complained of burning lips, but there weren't any leftovers, so people must have enjoyed the eats.

Al, Bill, & Missy brought in a gang of musicians to entertain the crowd. Their regular Song Swap night at the library coincided with the Chili Party, so there were free musicians available. The chili might have been gone by 9:00 but the jamming kept up until midnight. And the music often took on a good old Texas sound.

This year, we're moving the date up to May 8th in order to combine our love of Cinco de Mayo (& beer & Tequila) with our love of chili. Al's coordinating again, so let him know what you're bringing (355-1907). We figure even if the evening is cool, the food will be hot.
Estará una Buena Fiesta

The Annual HPA Easter Egg Hunt

Last April, Al & Roseanne threw an HPA Easter Egg Hunt at the beach. They so enjoyed themselves that it is happening again on April 11th. Bring your little ones to beach at about 10:30 and see what they dig up.

Thanks, Al & Ro. You're the official aunt & uncle of all the Holiday Point children.

HPA Picnic 2004

People drank, people ate,
and the day drifted by.
Children gobbled up whipped cream,
but no one had pie.
Eggs were tossed by the brave ones
with great expertise.
Children swam with abandon
and floated with ease.
VonPlacheki stopped by
and was served a few bites.
He envied our friendships
and on this he was right.
Neighbors as family and
families as friends,
it's the day of our picnic
we wish wouldn't end.
Time won't diminish
the memories we make,
in these heart healing moments
on Candlewood Lake.

Fourth of July

Thanks to the generosity of the Hernandez family and with assorted contributions from several other Holiday Pointers, there was a great show of fireworks at the point last summer.

The beach felt like a Hollywood set with children frolicking, families picnicking, and rows of people watching with sighs and squeals of delight. There were occasional blasts from the folks across the water, which seemed to become a conversation, explosion matching explosion. It was a scene fit for Norman Rockwell.

Impossible to duplicate? We'll see...
